The Rajarajeswara Temple at Taliparamba is one of the great Shiva temples of Kerala and is counted among the 108 ancient Shiva shrines of the state. Here Shiva is worshipped as Rajarajeswara – the king of kings – in a linga that devotees regard with special awe. The temple has an old reputation as a place where heartfelt prayers are answered, and kings and ordinary families alike have come here for generations.
The worship follows customs of its own. There is no flagstaff and no annual kodiyettam festival, and devotees do not prostrate in the namaskara mandapam. The best-known offering is ghee: small pots of ghee are placed on the steps of the sanctum, and this ghee feeds the lamps and the daily rituals. By long-standing custom, women devotees enter the nalambalam only in the evening, after the Athazha pooja.
The story goes that the temple was founded by Parashurama, designed by Vishwakarma and consecrated with the help of the sage Agastya. Devotees tell of three sacred lingas given by Shiva: the first was installed here by King Mandhata and in time sank into the earth; the second, given to his son Muchukunda, also disappeared. The third was received by King Shatasoma, who on Agastya's advice installed it in the present temple. When even this linga began to sink, it is said, Agastya lit a lamp of ghee and prostrated before it, and it stood firm – which is why ghee became the temple's chief offering.
Another legend says that Sri Rama, returning from Lanka, stopped here and prostrated in the namaskara mandapam. Out of respect for that moment, no one else prostrates there to this day.
In recorded history, the temple was rebuilt in its present form around the early 11th century, in the time of the Mushika (Kolathiri) rulers. It once had towering gopurams; in the late 18th century, during the campaigns of the Mysore army, the temple was attacked and its great gopuram was destroyed. The sreekovil, with its two-tiered copper-roofed vimana, survived, and worship continued. The Chirakkal rulers, the Zamorins of Kozhikode and the Travancore royal family were all devotees.
The temple is also a centre of traditional arts: Koodiyattam and Chakyar Koothu are staged here, and scholars and artists have been honoured with the golden armlet called Veerashrinkhala. Today the temple is administered under the Malabar Devaswom Board.

Traditional dress is expected. Men usually wear a mundu and enter without a shirt or vest; women commonly wear a saree, set-mundu or churidar. Please follow the temple's current notices.
By the temple's tradition only Hindus are allowed inside. Women devotees may enter the nalambalam only in the evening, after the Athazha pooja – usually from around 19:45–20:00 until the nada closes at about 20:30; during the day they worship from outside the nalambalam. Very young children are reportedly not taken inside the nalambalam. Devotees do not enter or prostrate in the namaskara mandapam. These customs can change, so please follow the temple's current notices.
The early-morning nirmalya darshan is considered especially auspicious. Evenings are busy because of the women's darshan after Athazha pooja; Shivaratri and Vishu draw the largest crowds. By tradition many devotees first visit the Trichambaram Sree Krishna Temple nearby.
